Fiji's marine environment continues to be threatened by overfishing
Science-to-Action initiatives are highlighting the ongoing threat of overfishing facing Fiji's marine environment. In a recent article in the Fiji Times, S2A coordinator Loraini Sivo said about 80 percent of Fiji's population lives along the coast and relies heavily on marine resources for their livelihood. “There is an increase in population and increase in demand on these resources,” she said. “And the marine environment continues to be a threat because of overfishing.”

Policy brief on enhancing marine management in East and Southeast Asia
We are pleased to announce the release of a policy brief on Targeted Research and Monitoring Programs for Enhanced Management of the Seas of East and Southeast Asia. The monitoring reports, assessments and surveys presented in this policy brief provide information on the current socioeconomic and environmental status of specific areas in the region. Also included are possible actions to be considered by policymakers and managers in response to identified gaps and shortcomings in existing management programs, as well as changing political, socioeconomic and ecological conditions in the concerned localities.

Assessment of Science-to-Action outcomes

To assess the Science-to-Action approach, an evaluation team conducted extensive interviews and research in four S2A focal areas: Brazil, Belize, Fiji and Panama. The assessment established whether, how and to what extent the S2A scientific research has contributed to more effective coastal and marine conservation action through the adoption of better management and policies. The assessment also identified lessons applicable to future S2A programs.
